BAP 2004 (1): “Chicken” by Kim Addonizio

Date November 28, 2004

Clever. Could have been a William Stafford parody until the farmer twists the neck of the chicken that tried to cross the road and “whose asshole his wife stuffed / with rosemary and a lemon wedge.” Incidentally, one of my all-time favorite Holiday cards says “Happy Thanksgiving” on the front and then has multiple pages exhorting the recipient to be grateful for food and friendship and on the last page “and a good time stuffing stale bread up a dead bird’s ass and eating it.”

I ended up liking the poem despite myself, particularly the last line describing the escaped prisoner. 4/5 chicken beaks.

Yeah, it was fun and it was fairly fresh, but the whole: innocent caged/escaped bird is like a caged/escaped prisoner bugged me, as did the condescending tone of the farmer bit.

That last image was a good one, however.
