The (no) Rules

Considering my personal rules for Poem-a-Day writing prompted me to think about my more general guiding principles for writing. I didn’t get very far.

  • Fail. Fail again. Fail better. –Samuel Beckett
  • It’s a poem if I say it is.
  • The thing’s hollow. It goes on forever. My god, it’s full of stars. –Dave Bowman
  • Listen, listen, listen.
  • The form is always the measure of the obsession. –Alberto Giacometti

I’ll have to figure it out as I go along. Come to think of it, that’s a pretty sound rule too.
